Previously on the staffs at Regis and Jacksonville, Darren Buckner was selected as assistant UC Davis women's volleyball coach, head coach Jamie Holmes has announced. Buckner, who replaced interim assistant Kip Yoshimura, joins Holmes and fourth-year assistant Addie Hauschild on the Aggie staff.
Buckner's arrival at UC Davis marks a return both to collegiate coaching and to the Pacific coast. He served as the top assistant at Jacksonville in 1993-94, then later coached at Division II Regis University from 2000-03. More recently, however, he owned and operated Big Line Construction in Bozeman, Mont.
Originally from Sandy, Ore., Buckner played collegiate volleyball at Golden West Community College in Huntington Beach, Calif. He also has competed at the USA Volleyball Open Championships. Buckner's coaching career spans all levels of volleyball, including three nationally esteemed clubs: Nike NW Juniors (Portland, Ore.), Boulder VBC (Boulder, Colo.) and Colorado Performance VBC (Denver, Colo.). He also has assisted with two Portland-area high schools and served on collegiate summer camps for more than 15 years.
Buckner graduated from Portland State in 2000, earning his degree in social sciences.
UC Davis posted a 20-10 record in 2009, finishing in a tie for second place in the Big West Conference. The win total is the program's highest since the Aggies went 21-11 as a member of the Division II non-scholarship Northern California Athletic Conference.
