Final Stats

DAVIS, Calif. --- Junior outside hitter Kate Wilton posted a match-high 12 kills and hit .476 to lead UC Davis to a 30-18, 30-23, 30-22 sweep of San Francisco State in the third of three non-conference women's collegiate volleyball matches held at Upper Hickey Gym Friday.

The Aggies, who beat Humboldt State in a three-game sweep earlier in the day, improves to 2-0 on the season. The Gators, winners of an earlier Friday match against Humboldt, evens their record to 1-1.

Tough serving and solid ball control highlighted UC Davis' play in both wins. Freshman Nicole Read had three aces in each match, as the Aggies served up a total of 26 aces in the six games. Kim Vincent scored 11 kills and Kelly Gaudino added 10 in the win over SFSU, while Mary McClelland led the Aggies' floor defense with 16 digs.

Kystyle Davis paced the Gators with 10 kills against UC Davis. Teammates Casey Petersen and Brooke Leverette each contributed 13 digs.

SFSU gave the Aggies their toughest challenge in Game 3 of the nightcap, taking a 14-12 lead midway through the frame when back-to-back Petersen kills to spark a 4-0 run. But UC Davis finished strong, stretching a 20-19 lead into a 26-20 margin. Amber Korner finished the match by serving up a free ball situation for Gaudino, who knocked down her 10th kill for a 29-22 lead. Then Vincent sent a shot into the deepest corner of the court to seal the win with the 30th point.

In the Aggies' opener, Wilton recorded 12 kills and 13 digs to lead her team to a 30-15, 30-21, 30-27 sweep of Humboldt State. She did most of her damage in Game 1, piling up eight kills and nine digs and serving up a 7-0 run to start the match.

UC Davis played all 15 players in each match, with only setter Marritt Cafarchia appearing in all six games.

SFSU swept Humboldt in Friday's second match, as Petersen posted 12 kills and 12 digs en route to a 30-27, 30-26, 32-30 win. Davis and teammate Aziza Bledsoe added nine kills for the Gators in the win. Setter Chris Matteucci had 37 assists and contributed a perfect 4-for-4 outing on offense against the 'Jacks.

For Humboldt, Jessica Murray led with 10 digs while Rachel Halverson had nine kills and 11 digs. Vescinda Alvord posted five service aces, all in the second pair of frames.

San Francisco State and Humboldt State face off in Saturday's opener at 10:30 a.m. Then UC Davis will face the Lumberjacks at 1 p.m. to conclude its season-opening weekend.
