DAVIS, Calif. --- Junior outside hitter Kate Wilton posted 14
kills and was one of four Aggies with double-figured digs as UC Davis beat
Humboldt State 30-26, 30-22, 25-30, 30-22, in a non-conference collegiate
women's volleyball match at Upper Hickey Gym Saturday.
The Aggies improve to 3-0 on the season. The Lumberjacks drop to 0-4.
Junior Mary McClelland and redshirt freshman Christina Ng, both of whom
split time between defensive specialist and libero, each had 16 digs. Wilton
and senior outside hitter Kelly Gaudino each recorded 15 digs. Gaudino also
contributed 13 kills in three games on offense. Freshman Nicole Read hit
.455 on 11 attempts and added four blocks at the net.
Stacy Knisley led all hitters with 18 kills for Humboldt State. She also
added 15 digs. In all, five Lumberjacks reached double-figured digs, led
by libero Kandis Benton, who had a match-high 21.
"We feel a lot more confident as a team. We go out there believing
we're going to win," said Wilton. "When we got behind or we lost
that third game, we just came right back. Losing that game was a wake-up
call that we had to play our best and come back strong."
Humboldt led for the entirety of Game 3 as Knisley broke loose for seven
kills in that frame. Kristina Barnum added four kills in the third game
and Julia Shaw scored back-to-back kills to give the 'Jacks a 27-22 lead
down the stretch.
The Lumberjacks opened the fourth game with a 10-7 lead, then committed
six hitting errors during a nine-point UC Davis run. Wilton added a pair
of kills in that span and Ng recorded her lone service ace as the Aggies
took the lead for good with a 16-10 advantage.
In earlier Saturday action, Brooke Leverette had 12 kills and three aces
to lead San Francisco State to a 30-26, 30-22, 30-24 sweep of Humboldt State.
Leverette and teammate Casey Petersen also had 16 digs to lead the Gator
floor defense. Shaw led the Lumberjacks with eight kills and 14 digs in
the loss.
UC Davis returns to action September 5 for a tournament hosted by Seattle
Pacific. The Aggies will face the host Falcons Friday, then Seattle University
and Western Washington on Saturday.
