SAN FRANCISCO - Sophomore outside hitter Nicole Read hit .293 and led UC Davis with 17 kills in four total games as the Aggies lost a pair of matches in the first day of action of the University of San Francisco Coca-Cola C2 Classic women's volleyball tournament Friday.

UC Davis fell to Hofstra University, 30-19, 27-30, 30-25, 28-30, 15-8 in the day's opening match, then lost to the host Dons in a 30-15, 30-18, 30-18 sweep.The Aggies drop to 0-3 on the year.

In the opener, Julie Tatar recorded a match-high 15 kills, including three in the final stretch of the decisive Game 5, to lead the Pride to victory. Hofstra had an opportunity to put the match away in the fourth game, holding a 27-19 lead late in the frame. But kills by Aggie sophomore Rachel Keener and freshman setter Katelyn Astruc, coupled with three straight Hofstra attack errors, allowed UC Davis to finish on an 11-1 run and force the fifth game.

Senior libero Mary McClelland posted a match-high 21 digs while outside hitter Kate Wilton led UC Davis with 13 kills in this morning's action. Read had 11 kills, including seven in Game 3 and two down the stretch in the Aggies Game 2 win.

USF mainainted control throughout its three-game sweep, hitting .469 in Game 1, then .472 and .400 in the final two games, respectively. Theresa Hart tallied a match-high 11 kills on 25 swings for a .400 avverage. Teammate Stephanie Voelckers narrowly missed a double-double, recording 12 digs and nine kills for the Dons.

Read had a 6-0-14 hitting line to lead UC Davis in the afternoon match. McClelland again led in digs with 11. However, the Aggies hit just .064 as a team and committed eight service errors against just one ace.
