SAN FRANCISCO - UC Davis lost two matches, including one against a future Big West Conference rival, to finish 0-4 in the two-day Coca-Cola C2 Classic women's volleyball tournament at the University of San Francisco Saturday. The Aggies were swept by Central Connecticut State, 30-24, 31-29, 30-23, in morning action, then dropped a four-game match to UC Riverside, 32-30, 28-30, 30-18, 30-21.
UC Davis moves to 0-5 on the year. Riverside, members of the Big West, won the tournament with a 4-0 record.
In Saturday's opener, Jenny Pierce had 10 kills and hit .368 to lead the Aggies offensively. She also recorded three blocks, including one solo stuff. Redshirt freshman setter Katelyn Astruc also contributed on offense, hitting 7-0-17 for a .412 clip. Mary McClelland tallied a team-best 14 digs.
CCSU hit .342 in Game 1 to open the match, then .294 in the third game. Chantelle Bowden and Jennifer Cote hit .367 and .381, respectively, combining for 23 kills. Jackie Jackson had 12 kills and hit .290 for the Blue Devils.
No stats were available for the Aggies' nightcap against UC Riverside. The Highlanders had three players on the all-tournament team, including MVP Jamie DeKiewiet. USF libero Brynn Maurer and outside hitter Stephanie Voelckers also made the squad, as did Hofstra's Elizabeth Curley.
UC Davis returns home to host the Aggie Invitational. The Aggies face Nevada on Friday, then Brown and Montana in Saturday's action.
