No. 11 Western Washington sweeps UC Davis at Viking Invite

The hot hitting of Kristy Carstensen and Meghan Evoy led No. 11 Western Washington to a 30-23, 30-27, 30-18 sweep over UC Davis in the fourth match of the Viking Invitational women's volleyball tournament at Carver Gym Friday.

The Aggies drop to 4-2 on the season, going 1-1 in Friday's tournament action. WWU improves to 4-1 overall.

Senior middle Cassandra Prell and junior outside hitter Kelly Gaudino led UC Davis with eight kills each. Gaudino posted a team-best 15 digs while libero Mary McClelland added 11.

UC Davis gave its closest chase in Game 2, rallying back from a 23-15 deficit to tie the game, 26-26. However, WWU added on four more points ? including Evoy's game-winning kill ? to capture the middle frame.

The Aggies posted their highest hitting percentage in the 30-18 Game 3 loss, with a .233 clip. However, the Vikings countered with 21 kills against just three errors for a blistering .486 hitting average.

Carstersen led all hitters with 16 kills and a .520 rate. She opened the match with 12 kills in her first 13 swings. Evoy and teammate Shannon Rowland added 13 kills each for the Vikings.

In UC Davis' first match of the day, senior middle blocker Elizabeth Brown posted 11 kills and no errors to lead UC Davis to a 30-27, 30-27, 30-21 sweep over Seattle Pacific. Defensively, Gaudino led UC Davis with 22 digs while Prell anchored the net with five total blocks. The Aggies recorded 10.0 blocks as a team. Setter Marritt Cafarchia added 31 assists and eight digs.



The Aggies face seventh-ranked BYU-Hawaii and Northwest Nazarene in Saturday's tourney competition.
