Junior Kristen Andreatta posted a match-high 22 kills and hit .429 to
lead Notre Dame de Namur to a four-game, 23-30, 30-25, 30-20, 30-25, victory
over UC Davis in a non-conference women's volleyball match Tuesday at Hickey
Gym.
The Aggies, who have lost four straight, drop to 4-5 on the season. The
Argos improve to 9-3 overall.
Jennifer Lucas added 18 kills, 14 digs and 4 aces for NDNU, while Danielle
Dooly hit 13-2-23 (.478) to provide steady offensive punch.
For the Aggies, sophomore Kim Vincent led with 14 kills while Cassandra
Prell and Kelly Gaudino each added 10. Gaudino led UC Davis with 16 digs.
"[Notre Dame] served very tough and ran a very efficient offense,"
said UC Davis head coach Stephanie Hawbecker. "They are a well-coached
and experienced team, and it showed. They were a step ahead of us."
UC Davis came out strong in Game 1, outhitting NDNU .250 to .064 to
take a 1-0 lead. Vincent had five of her 14 total kills in that game, while
Ellen Fitzpatrick added four more.
But the Argos gained control in Game 2, running up an 11-6 lead and eventually
a 27-19 margin. Facing a 29-20 game point, the Aggies scored five straight
sparked by back-to-back aces by freshman Jill McPheeters but
Doolt knocked down the winning point to even up the match score.
UC Davis' hitting percentage steadily declined as the match progressed.
The Aggies hit .250 in Game 1, then dropped to .211 in the second, .154
in the third and .103 in the final game.
"We are still a very inexperienced team. We need to learn how to
slow matches down," said Hawbecker. "We speed up the game when
we should slow it down. It just adds to the chaos."
UC Davis had four players in double-figured digs. In addition to Gaudino's
16, Mary McClelland had 15 while Vincent and setter Marritt Cafarchia each
posted 10.
The Aggies open California Collegiate Athletic Association play Friday
with a home match against Cal St. San Bernardino, ranked No. 1 in this week's
American Volleyball Coaches Association Top 25 poll.
