Coyotes Sweep Aggies In CCAA Volleyball Opener

Sept. 13, 2002

DAVIS, Calif. - Junior middle blocker Kim Morohunfola posted 10 kills and four blocks to lead top-ranked Cal St. San Bernardino to a 30-16, 30-21, 30-26 sweep over UC Davis in California Collegiate Athletic Association women's volleyball action at Hickey Gym Friday.

The host Aggies drop to 4-6 on the season, and open conference play with an 0-1 mark. The Coyotes, who hold the top spot in the American Volleyball Coaches' Association Division II top 25 poll, stay unbeaten at 9-0 overall and 1-0 in league.

"We were just physically overmatched," said UC Davis head coach Stephanie Hawbecker. "They are number one for a good reason. They don't get ruffled, they are very experienced and it shows.

"We knew Kim Morohunfola and Kim Ford were go-to players for them. We wanted to put two blockers on them at all times, and to serve tough and take them out of their side-out offense."

Freshman Jessica Nelthorpe led CSSB with 12 kills while Erika Williams and Kim Ford each recorded 12 digs. Morohunfola enjoyed a .444 hitting percentage in the win.

For UC Davis, Kim Vincent recorded match-highs with 14 kills and 13 digs, but also had 16 hitting errors for the match. Fellow sophomore Kate Wilton gave the Aggies a boost in the later games, tallying eight kills, nine digs and a .462 hitting average.

UC Davis suffered 24 hitting errors during the first two games, including four of the first five attempts in Game 2. But after trailing 10-2 early in the second game, the Aggies mustered some offense to finish strong. Vincent had six kills in the latter half of that game.

Wilton put up five kills and five digs in the third game, during which UC Davis posted six team blocks. Meanwhile, the Coyotes were charged with nine hitting errors in Game 3, despite committing just seven in the first two.

"We got used to what they were doing and got some energy from people who usually don't get to play," said Hawbecker of the closer Game 3 battle. "Jennie [Tilles] has been serving very well and Mary [Gaber] is a good block.

UC Davis also gained ground on the San Bernardino's serving. The Coyotes had five aces in the match, but also suffered 13 service errors.

The Aggies continue CCAA action Saturday night with a home match against Cal Poly Pomona. The Coyotes head to Chico State to finish the weekend series.
