Despite 22 kills and a season-best .475 hitting average from senior outside hitter Kelly Gaudino, UC Davis was unable to defend an early lead, losing 27-30, 30-22, 30-25, 30-15 to Cal Poly Pomona in a two-hour California Collegiate Athletic Association women's volleyball match at Darlene May Gymnasium Saturday.

The Aggies even their record to 4-4 and fall to 0-2 in conference play. The Broncos improve to 7-3 and 2-0 in the CCAA.

Gaudino committed just three error in 40 attempts en route to her offensive output. Freshman Nicole Read attempted a season-high 23 swings, knocking down 13 kills against just one hitting error. She also had all three of UC Davis' aces and three block assists. Outside hitter Kate Wilton posted 12 kills and 12 digs for the night.

Kimberly Van Beek led Pomona with 24 kills and a .475 average to add to her three aces. Lindsay Fischer contributed 12 kills, 13 digs and three blocks while Rachel Hastert led all players with 16 digs.

The Broncos hit just .150 in the Game 1 loss, but steadily improved their offensive efficiency, hitting .263 and .275 in the next two games. Pomona then put away 13 kills on 25 attempts in Game 4 to finish off the match.

UC Davis returns home for a non-conference match against Notre Dame De Namur on September 16, then returns to CCAA action with home matches against Sonoma State and San Francisco State the following weekend.
