DAVIS, Calif. - Zuzana Cernianska posted a match-high 28 kills and hit .418 to lead Utah State to a 22-30, 30-28, 30-15, 30-11 win over UC Davis in a women's collegiate volleyball match at the Pavilion Saturday.

UC Davis falls to 1-12 on the season. Utah State, members of the Big West Conference, improves to 2-7 overall.

Davis' Kate Wilton had eight kills and just one error before leaving the match late in the second game. Senior libero Mary McClelland tied her career high of 30 digs. Sophomore Rachel Keener led all UC Davis Aggie hitters with 17 kills.

UC Davis suffered offensively early in Game 1, hitting 1-6-16 in the early going to fall behind, 12-5. However, the home team battled back to a 15-15 tie, then a McClelland dig helped launch an 8-0 run, turning a 21-19 deficit to a 27-21 lead. WIlton had four kills and two solo blocks in that run, then served up the final two points for UC Davis.

However, Utah State responded in Game 2 by constructing an early 9-3 start. UC Davis fought back, getting back-to-back blocks by Katelyn Astruc and Kim Vincent, tying the game at 20-20. Cernianska recorded three kills down the stretch, helping USU claim a 30-28 win for the frame. Cernianska had nine kills on 18 swings in the second game.

The visiting Aggies enjoyed an offensive blitzkrieg in Game 3, tallying 18 kills and hitting a combined .531. Cernianska hit 7-0-11, and Amanda Orgill hit back-to-back kills to establish a 29-15 game point.

Utah State exploded again in the fourth, pulling away from a 5-5 tie with two long serving runs by Ingrid Roth and Carolyn Forbush. Roth served up seven straight points to 12-5 before UC Davis sophomore Nicole Read stopped the bleeding with a kill. Later in the stanza, Cernianska had thre kills as part of a nine-point Forbush serving stretch. In all, USU went 20-2 down the middle of the third game en route to the win.

 

 

Orgill finished the match with 11 kills to go with seven blocks. Libero Kelsi Thoman led four Utah State players in double-figure digs, recording 19 for the match. Utah State had 14 total blocks as a team.

UC Davis returns to action for road matches against future Big West foes UC Irvine and Long Beach State on October 8 and 9.
