Grand Canyon Holds Off Valiant Aggie Comeback Bid

PHOENIX, Ariz. --- Sophomore outside hitter Kate Wilton recorded a career-high 24 kills and added 14 digs but UC Davis was unable to finish a valiant comeback effort against Grand Canyon, dropping a five-game, 30-28, 30-23, 27-30, 25-30, 15-9 marathon in California Collegiate Athletic Association women's volleyball action at Antelope Gym Friday.

The Aggies are now 6-11 on the season, and 2-5 in conference play. The 'Lopes improve to 7-8 overall, and 2-5 in league.

Junior setter Natalie Jandreau hit a robust .529 with 11 dig to go with her 43 assists. Mandy Forrest posted a team-high 14 kills while teammate Danielle Davis had 12 kills and 18 digs for GCU. Laura Huff was the fourth GCU player in double-figured kills, chipping in 11 in four games played.

UC Davis was led defensively by Kelly Gaudino with 20 digs, while libero Mary McClelland added 16 and Jennie Tilles contributed with a career-best 14. Freshman Jill McPheeters hit .400 for the match and led all player with four service aces.

The Aggies found themselves in a 2-0 hole after hitting minus-.021 in the second game. However, they hit .250 to take a tight 30-27 win in Game 3, then evened the match with a 30-25 victory in Game 4. Grand Canyon held UC Davis to minus-.091 hitting in the fifth and deciding game to claim the win.

UC Davis faces No. 10 UC San Diego on Saturday.
