LONG BEACH, Calif. -
Freshman sensation Alexis Crimes posted 12 kills while teammate Jillian Mazzarella added 10 to lead 23rd-ranked Long Beach State to a 30-11, 30-21, 30-21 sweep over UC Davis in a non-conference women's collegiate volleyball match at the Pyramid Saturday.
The Aggies drop to 1-14 for the year. The 49ers, ranked 23rd in this week's CSTV/USA Today poll, improve to 13-2 overall.
Crimes and Mazzarella combined for an even .500 hitting average, taking 38 swings and committing just three errors between them. Crimes added six block assists on defense, while Mazzarella, a senior setter, recorded 31 assists.
UC Davis' offense was plagued by a total of 32 hitting errors, resulting in an attack rate of minus-.038. Senior middle Kim Vincent was a bright spot offensively, recorded a .308 average to go with two service aces and a pair of block assists. Libero Mary McClelland picked up two aces and a match-high 14 digs for the Aggies.
The 30-11 margin in Game 1 matches the Aggies' most lopsided loss since collegiate volleyball adopted the 30-point rally scoring system. UC Davis also lost a 30-11 game against Utah State two weeks ago.
The Aggies briefly led the second game, opening the stanza on a 4-1 start. However, the 49ers responded with a 9-6 run to tie the game at 10-10, then enjoyed a 6-1 stretch to take the lead for good.
UC Davis returns to action on October 16 for a home match against Cal St. Northridge, another future rival in the Big West Conference.
