DAVIS, Calif. --- Senior middle blocker Amanda Oliver hit .579
while teammate Sarah Barnett posted 11 kills and 16 digs to lead Cal St.
Stanislaus to a 30-27, 30-21, 30-22 sweep over UC Davis in California Collegiate
Athletic Association women's volleyball action Friday at Hickey Gym.
The Aggies have now dropped four straight, moving to 6-13 overall and
2-8 in conference play. The Warriors improve to 13-7 on the season, and
7-3 in league.
Oliver had 12 kills against one error on 19 attempts to compile her match-high
hitting average. Between her and teammate Stacie Reyes, the CSUS starting
middles had 21 kills and three errors for a .486 clip. Reyes also had five
total blocks, including three solos.
Junior Kelly Gaudino led UC Davis with 11 kills while Jennie Tilles recorded
a career-high 15 digs as a back-row specialist. Libero Mary McClelland added
14 digs for the Aggies.
"Stanislaus is on a confidence roll," said UC Davis head coach
Stephanie Hawbecker. "They turned a corner with this team in the second
half of last season. I believe they feel they can win every match they play.
"We didn't execute our game plan. Stanislaus relies on its back
row defense. When we used the block, good things happened for us. When we
hit around the block, they made things happen."
Carrying a slim 26-24 lead in Game 1, the Warriors got consecutive kills
by Mary Beacham, Reyes and Barnett to set up a 29-24 game point. A Gaudino
kill and a service ace by Cassandra Prell helped the Aggies stay alive in
that frame, but Reyes finished the job with a game-winning kill to give
CSUS a 1-0 lead.
Reyes served up eight straight points down the stretch of Game 2 to give
Stanislaus a comfortable 28-18 lead. Oliver and setter Tara Hilles each
had a kill and a block during that run, while the Aggies suffered five hitting
errors.
In Game 3, Oliver and Beacham were errorless on attack while Barnett
posted 11 digs to give the Warriors the win. Stanislaus established a 16-7
lead and rode it out to an eight-point, tallying 25 of its 62 digs in that
decisive game.
UC Davis faces Cal St. Bakersfield on Saturday night while Stanislaus
continues CCAA action at Chico State.
