DAVIS, Calif. --- Junior setter Lisa North posted 10 kills, 44 assists
and 11 digs to lead Cal St. Bakersfield to a 25-30, 30-14, 30-25, 30-17
win over UC Davis in a California Collegiate Athletic Association women's
volleyball match at Hickey Gym in front of an Aggie Pack-laden crowd of
419. The two-time All-CCAA performer also hit a match-high .529 for the
night, having committed just one hitting error in 17 attempts.
The Aggies fall to 6-14 on the season, and 2-9 in conference play. The
Roadrunners even their overall ledger to 8-8, and move to 5-6 in league.
Sophomore Kate Wilton had 12 kills for UC Davis, the only player with
double-figured kills. Kelly Gaudino had a match-high 20 digs, while Mary
McClelland added 14.
Offensively, however, the Aggies hit minus-.018. They hit in the red
during both Games 2 and 4, posting only 14 kills against 22 errors in those
two frames.
Jessica Slayton led the 'Runners with 16 kills to go with her 17 digs.
Middle blocker Nicole Brandt-Young hit 14-2-28 for a .429 average, and contributed
on seven blocks. Libero/defensive specialist Jill Blancada had a team-high
19 digs for CSUB.
UC Davis took the opening game by a score of 30-25, capitalizing on tough
serving and strong floor defense. As a team, the Aggies had 27 digs in Game
1, including eight from McClelland and seven from Gaudino.
"Our serving put some pressure on them," said Aggie head coach
Stephanie Hawbecker. "It's the one skill that is totally under your
control.
The 'Runners took control of the match in Game 2, tallying 11 kills on
their first 16 swings to transform an 8-8 tie into a comfortable 22-9 lead.
CSUB hit .500 and blocked five Aggie attacks during the second game.
"Bakersfield made some in-match adjustments to their block [in Game
2] and the wind just left our sails," said Hawbecker. "Performing
in critical moments can be stressful and we need to learn to thrive on that
pressure."
In Game 3, the Aggies built a 20-17 lead during a tight early battle,
but the 'Runners took control of the game on the shoulders of six UC Davis
hitting errors and strong serving runs from Brandt-Young and freshman Holly
Ameluxen. The offensive struggles continued for the Aggies as they committed
13 hitting errors in Game 4, six of which came on Roadrunner blocks. Lindsey
Jordan provided CSUB's offensive punch in the fourth game, posting a 7-1-11
line and two blocks.
UC Davis returns to action on Friday, October 18, with a road match at
Cal Poly Pomona.
