POMONA, Calif. --- Lindsay Fischer had 17 kills and 10 digs to lead Cal
Poly Pomona to a 30-22, 30-27, 29-31, 29-31, 15-10 marathon victory over
UC Davis in California Collegiate Athletic Association women's volleyball
action at Darlene May Gymnasium Friday night. The Broncos hit .538 in the
final game to take the win.
The Aggies fall to 6-15 on the season, and 2-10 in conference play. Pomona
improves to 15-5 overall, and 9-3 in conference play.
Mary Gaber made her first start at setter for UC Davis, replacing sophomore
Marritt Cafarchia, who suffered an ankle injury earlier this week. Gaber
responded with 37 assists and three aces, plus she hit 8-1-9 for a robust
.778 hitting average. Junior Kelly Gaudino led offensively with 10 kills
and provided nine digs on floor defense. Freshman Jill McPheeters hit .438
and had five blocks at the net.
Facing a 2-0 deficit, the Aggies battled back to take 31-29 wins in both
the third and fourth games. As a team, UC Davis hit .290 in Game 4 to force
the fifth and deciding game. But Pomona, which had hit at a .324 rate in
Game 4, improved to a rousing .538 in Game 5. The Broncos had seven kills
and no errors en route to a 15-10 win in the final frame.
Pomona had a trio of players Kimberly Bullock, Allison Anderson
and Carina Nusinov with 12 kills each. Bullock and Anderson posted
identical 12-3-21 offensive performances for a .429 hitting average. Kimberly
Van Beek added 11 kills and three aces.
The Aggies continue CCAA action with a match against No. 3 Cal St. San
Bernardino Saturday.
