DAVIS, Calif. --- Middle blockers Kim Morohunfola and Cathleen
Price each had match-high 14 kills on 21 attempts to lead Cal St. San Bernardino
to a 30-25, 30-22, 30-18 sweep of UC Davis in a California Collegiate Athletic
Association women's volleyball match at Upper Hickey Gym Saturday.
The Aggies drop to 11-9 on the season and 6-7 in conference. The Coyotes,
ranked No. 3 in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association D-II
poll, improve to 18-2 overall and 12-1 in CCAA play.
Morohunfola committed just two errors during the match to post a .571
hitting average. Price had just three hitting errors for a .524 clip. As
a team, San Bernardino hit .371, helped also by setter Cristen Trent's 7-0-10
offensive numbers. Kim Ford added 10 kills and a match-high 15 digs for
the Coyotes.
For UC Davis, senior Kelly Gaudino led with eight kills while fellow
outside hitters Kim Vincent and Kate Wilton each had seven. Gaudino shouldered
much of the offensive load in the match, taking 45 of her team's 126 total
attacks. Freshman middle blocker Nicole Read also had seven kills and a
.333 hitting average. Libero Mary McClelland led the floor defense with
12 digs.
"We lost to a superior team and missed some opportunities to exploit
their minor weaknesses," said Aggie head coach Stephanie Hawbecker.
"San Bernardino was ready to play. When they saw we had beaten Pomona
[Friday], they were ready. They were sharp from the get-go."
The Coyotes hit .349 in Game 1, .340 in Game 2 then turned up the offense
to a blistering .441 average in the decisive Game 3.
UC Davis managed five straight points early in the first game to take
a brief 13-12 lead but San Bernardino responded with three consecutive kills
soon after to go back up by a 17-14 advantage. The Coyotes never trailed
for the rest of Game 1. Price had six kills on nine swings in that game.
CSUSB started Game 2 with five straight points and eventually built an
18-7 lead. The Aggies answered with 13 of the next 20 points to approach
to a 25-20 deficit, but a successful dump by Trent helped spark a 4-0 run
that gave the Coyotes a 29-20 game point. Morohunfola put down her seventh
kill of Game 2 to give her team a 2-0 lead in games.
The Aggies started 5-3 in Game 3 but the CSUSB offense took over with
a 6-0 run. Morohunfola had two blocks and two kills in that stretch. The
Coyotes committed just four errors as a team while Ford, Jessica Nelthorpe
and April Nicolson each had four Game 3 kills. Ford and libero Bridget Crosby
also had five digs in the third game.
After three weeks at home, UC Davis returns to the road for CCAA matches
at San Francisco State and Sonoma State on October 24 and 25.
