DAVIS, Calif. - Senior middle blocker Sarah Meek hammered out a match-high 15 kills and hit .522 to lead Idaho to a 30-21, 30-27, 30-17 sweep over UC Davis in a non-conference women's volleyball match at the Pavilion Saturday.
The Aggies drop to 1-16 for the season. The Vandals improve to 14-6 overall.
Junior opposite Mary Gaber recorded 11 kills and a pair of blocks off the bench for UC Davis. Senior Mary McClelland had 17 digs, while middle Jenny Pierce posted five total blocks, including a solo stuff.
The Aggies held an 18-17 lead in Game 1 before the Vandals went on a 10-0 run to take a commanding lead in the frame. Idaho had four blocks in that stretch, all of which involved sophomore middle blocker Erin Curtis. Meek hit 5-1-6 in the game.
Idaho opened with a 6-1 run behind the serving of Saxony Brown. UC Davis chipped away at the lead, as Gaber recorded a solo block then a block assist to cut the margin to 27-23 in favor of the Vandals. Senior Kate Wilton knocked down another kill to bring the score to 27-24, but Meek stopped the Aggie run with a kill on a free-ball situation. Gaber responded to that with a nice tool at 28-25, then hit her fifth kill of the game to ward off a game-point ball at 29-26. Aggie setter Katelyn Astruc brought her team within two points with a kill, but Curtis finally put away the game-winner, giving Idaho a 2-0 lead in games.
After a see-saw battle leveled the Game 3 score at 10-10, Idaho went on a 12-2 run behind two kills and a block by Curtis. Kati Tikker had two kills in the final four points to help the Vandals seal a 30-17 win and the match victory.
Curtis finished the match with 10 kills and seven total blocks. Setter Mandy Becker posted a match-high 18 digs.
UC Davis returns to action with a home match against Sacramento State on Tuesday, October 23.
