Golden Eagles Post Strong Finish In Four-Game Win

LOS ANGELES, Calif. --- Dana Coffey's 22 kills led four Golden Eagles in double-figured offense as Cal State L.A. beat UC Davis, 30-23, 30-22, 24-30, 30-17, in a California Collegiate Athletic Assocation women's volleyball match at the Eagles' Nest Saturday.
The Aggies drop to 8-18 on the season, and 4-13 in conference play. The Golden Eagles, who just missed a national ranking in this week's AVCA Top 25 poll, improve to 16-8 overall and 12-5 in league.
For UC Davis, Kelly Gaudino led with 14 kills and 11 digs while teammate Kate Wilton also put up a double-double with 13 kills and 10 digs. Libero Mary McClelland also had 10 digs for the Aggies. Middle blocker Cassandra Prell posted nine total blocks, including three solo stuffs.
Leslie Smith had 12 kills and no errors for a .667 average. Teammate Tricia Schary added 13 kills and hit .423, helping CSULA hit .335 as a team. Setter Kristy Sain led the Golden Eagles defensively, recording 15 digs for the match. She also assisted on 68 kills.
Trailing two games to none, UC Davis piled up 20 kills and hit .326 collectively to win Game 3 by a 30-24 margin, holding off a Golden Eagle sweep. The CSULA responded in the fourth game with a .447 team hitting average knocking down 19 kills against just two errors to complete the win.
The Golden Eagles, who had 80 kills in all, also managed a .444 offensive clip in Game 1.
UC Davis has three matches next week, starting with a Wednesday road match at Chico State.
