UC Davis dominates Cal State Fullerton in 3-0 sweep

DAVIS, Calif. - Junior outside hitter Brianna Karsseboom tallied a match-high 15 kills and hit .481 overall while freshman Mahalia White chipped in another 13 kills, helping UC Davis sweep Cal State Fullerton by scores of 25-10, 25-13, 25-12 in Big West Conference volleyball action at the Pavilion Thursday night.


The Aggies, who completed the sweep in just one hour, 12 minutes, improve to 14-11 for the year and 6-6 in league play. The Titans slip to 5-19 overall and 1-10 in Big West action.


Overall, Karsseboom led a junior trio of hitters who combined for a .571 efficiency rate. The managerial economics major from Alameda committed just two errors on 27 attempts, while providing eight digs and five blocks defensively. Outside hitter Emily Allen hit 9-1-15 for a .571 clip and middle blocker Lauren Jackson finished 7-for-8 without an error. For her part, White hit .258 on a team-leading 31 attempts.


As a team, UC Davis hit .383, the program's highest since a .385 clip at Cal Poly on November 9, 2012. Freshman setter Paloma Bowman had 33 assists in her second match facing her older sister, Nastassja, a sophomore setter on the Titans. The Aggies also combined for 10.5 blocks, with redshirt junior Kelechi Ohiri leading the way with six blocks. Junior libero Malia Bolko led the floor defense with 19 digs. UC Davis also never trailed and never tied at any point in the match.


Cal State Fullerton managed just 11 kills for the entire match, and suffered a negative attack percentage in each of the three sets. Madeline Sanchez had nearly half of that offense with five kills. The Titans only had two kills in the opener, with the second one making the score 22-10.


White had five kills in each of the first two sets. Allen and Jackson were a perfect 8-for-8 combined in the first set, Jackson continued on for another 3-0-3 line in the second, while White also went errorless to help UC Davis hit a torrid .545 in the frame. Karsseboom took over in the third set with eight kills on 12 swings.


The 1:12 length of match is also the fastest in head coach Dan Conners' era at the Aggie helm. The last faster tilt was a 3-0 sweep of UNLV on August 27, 2011 that went 1:11.


UC Davis returns to action in a home match against UC Riverside. The match is dedicated to the memory of Gary Colberg, both a volleyball officiating legend and the former director of sports clubs and intramuals for the university. Gary's wife, Debby, was on hand for Thursday's match as she coached the two Bowman sisters; and will be in attendance on Satuday to inaugurate the annual tribute.
