DAVIS, Calif. --- Senior middle blocker Jennie Wilson posted 12 kills
and a .385 hitting average to lead UC San Diego to a 30-25, 30-14, 30-20
sweep over UC Davis in a California Collegiate Athletic Association women's
volleyball match at Upper Hickey Gym Friday night. Wilson had nine of her
dozen kills in the third game of the match.
The Aggies drop to 8-20 on the season and 4-15 in CCAA play. The Tritons,
ranked eighth in the American Volleyball Coaches Assocation Top 25 Division
II poll, improve to 22-4 overall and 16-3 in league.
Wilson also paced her team with nine digs, while teammate Francesca Centofanti
hit .353 and provided seven digs. As a team, UCSD hit .414 and .412 in the
final two games, respectively.
For UC Davis, Cassandra Prell hit .313 and posted a pair of blocked shots.
Junior Kelly Gaudino was the lone Aggie in double-figured kills with 10,
while Mary McClelland and Kate Wilton each had nine digs to lead the floor
defense.
"We played respectably tonight -- we just were beaten by a better
team," said UC Davis head coach Stephanie Hawbecker. "We earned
some respect from the second-best team in the conference. A big key for
us was that we wanted to make San Diego earn their points instead of just
letting them happen.
"I felt we contained their slide offense much better. They ate us
alive last time we played them. This time, we slowed it down and made them
work for it."
Wilson helped ignite her team in the first game, serving up nine straight
points to erase an early 11-8 Aggie lead. UC Davis worked its way back to
a 20-20 tie but the Tritons responded with four more points to take the
lead for good.
Aggie setter Marritt Cafarchia's quick tip ended a 10-point rally to
open Game 2. UCSD did not commit a single hitting error in the first 20
points nor in the final 16 points of the game to take a 2-0 advantage.
Centofanti's back-to-back kills helped the Tritons stretch out a 19-17
lead into a 27-18 margin late in the third game. She and Wilson combined
for six of UCSD's final nine points to complete the sweep.
UC Davis plays its final home match Saturday night against Grand Canyon.
The Aggie team will honor seniors Prell and Elizabeth Brown.
