PHOENIX, Ariz. - Freshman middle blocker Nicole Read hit .348 and had six total blocks to lead UC Davis to a 34-32, 30-25, 30-28 sweep of Grand Canyon in a California Collegiate Athletic Association women's volleyball match at Antelope Gymnasium Saturday.
The Aggies improve to 15-12 overall and even their conference record to 10-10. The Antelopes drop to 9-16 on the year and 8-12 in CCAA play.
Outside hitters Kelly Gaudino and Kate Wilton combined for 31 kills for UC Davis. Wilton also posted a team-best 10 digs. Of Read's six blocks, three were solo efforts. Libero Mary McClelland and defensive specialist Marritt Cafarchia added nine and eight digs, respectively.
Senior Mandy Forrest had 15 kills and hit .407 to lead Grand Canyon offensively. She was also of five 'Lope seniors honored for playing in their final home matches Saturday. Forrest also added three service aces and five blocks, including three solos. Melanie Vidoni and Natalie Jandreau each had 12 digs for GCU.
The Aggies overcame a 9-3 deficit in Game 1 to tie the game at 15-15 and eventually pick up the 34-32 win to start the match. Gaudino had nine of her 17 kills in that frame. UC Davis later enjoyed a 7-1 run in Game 2 - helped by three Read blocks - to break open a 19-19 tie into a 26-20 lead.
In Game 3, the Aggies never led by more than one point until the final score of 30-28. Gaudino and Wilton had three kills down the stretch of the match to seal the third-game victory and the sweep.
UC Davis finishes its season with matches at Cal St. Bakersfield Friday and Cal St. Stanislaus Saturday.
