TURLOCK, Calif. --- Outside hitter Kelly Gaudino led all hitters
with 13 kills and opposite Ellen Fitzpatrick hit .714 as the two seniors
led UC Davis to a 30-22, 30-18, 30-23 sweep over Cal St. Stanislaus in a
California Collegiate Athletic Association women's volleyball match in front
of 512 at Warrior Arena Saturday.
The Aggies finish their final season in the CCAA with a 16-13 overall
record and a 11-11 conference mark. The Warriors ended the year at 1-26
overall and 1-21 in CCAA play.
Junior outside hitter Kate Wilton provided 11 kills and four service
aces for UC Davis. Freshman Nicole Read had seven kills against just one
error on 16 swings for a .375 hitting average. Freshman middle blocker Rachel
Keener also helped the offensive cause, hitting .500 on 10 attempts. Gaudino
led her team with 11 digs while junior libero Mary McClelland added nine.
McClelland finished the 2003 season with a 423 digs, the highest total
by an Aggie since Candy Lench posted 493 in 1990. She edged All-American
setter Denise Bilbaeno for second place on the school's single-season list.
Bilbaeno recorded 420 digs in 1990.
Gaudino finished her four-year career with 1,337 kills and 1,262 digs,
both good for second in the Aggie record books.
The Aggies started the match on a 6-0 run and built that lead to 16-6.
Stanislaus cut the game to as close as 24-20 but UC Davis finished 6-2 to
take a 1-0 lead. The Aggies hit .313 in that game.
UC Davis also rode a 16-6 start in Game 2, hitting a torrid .394 in the
game. Read had two kills down the stretch as the Aggies scored six of the
final seven points en route to a 30-18 win.
Stanislaus posted 20 digs in a more competitive Game 3, approaching to
a 23-21 deficit late in the game. However, Gaudino put down two kills in
a 7-2 run that completed the sweep for the Aggies.
Stacie Reyes led Stanislaus with 11 kills and a .333 hitting average.
She also had three block assists. Janee Richards posted a match-high 13
digs of floor defense.
The Aggies will begin play in the Big West Conference in 2004.
