Dec. 27, 2011

DAVIS, Calif. - A total of 18 UC Davis student-athletes made the Big West Academic All-Conference roster for fall sports, it was announced by the league officer during the holiday break. The Aggie women's cross country team had the highest representation with six honorees, while women's soccer landed five on the list. The women's volleyball team had four of its players on the honor roll, men's soccer claimed two and men's cross country had one representative.

To be eligible for All-Academic honors, a student-athlete must hold a cumulative grade-point average of 3.2 or higher, complete one full year at the member institution prior to the season for which the award is credited, and have competed in at least 50 percent of his/her team's contests.

Among 27 overall women's cross country honorees in the sport, UC Davis boasted a delegation of six: senior Samantha Kearney, juniors Sarah Sumpter and Lauren Wallace; and sophomores Alycia Cridebring, Shannon Harcus and Hilary Teaford. This is the fifth such award for Kearney, who has previously won two fall all-academic nods and two spring accolades in track and field.

Women's soccer had 39 overall honorees, including five Aggies: seniors Aisha Lott, Annacy Wilson and Elise Winbrock; and juniors Jenna Brehmer and Anna Quigley. UC Davis women's volleyball claimed four awards among the 30 in the sport, namely seniors Katie Denny and Betsy Sedlak; junior Allison Whitson and sophomore Valerie Brain.

On the men's side, sophomore Alex Summers was the lone Aggie cross country runner among 14 in the sport. Senior Mustafa Chopan and sophomore Ian Palmer represented UC Davis among 16 total men's soccer honorees. Chopan's award is the third of his career.

The total of 18 all-academic winners represents a new high for the Aggie fall teams. UC Davis had 16 fall honorees in its inaugural year of 2007, 15 in 2008, then 13 in each of 2009 and 2010.
