SAN JOSE, Calif. - Senior center Allyson Hansen totaled five goals while sophomore Sammy Preston notched her first collegiate hat trick to highlight ninth-ranked UC Davis at the season-opening LouStrong Memorial women's water polo tournament at San Jose State Saturday. The Aggies tied a school single-game scoring record in a 24-3 win over Cal State Monterey Bay, then battled top-ranked Stanford before falling by an 11-6 final.

Hansen, Preston, junior Hannah Harvey and junior Carla Tocchini each netted three goals in the victory over the Otters. Senior Ariel Arcidiacono and the sophomore tandem of Heather Johnson and Greta Kohlmoos each added two, helping UC Davis match the previous offensive benchmark, set in a 24-0 shutout of Chapman back on April 10, 1999.

The Aggies scored 13 unanswered in the first 13 minutes of play before CSUMB junior Amanda Kitchen broke up the shutout bid with her goal with two minutes left in the half. UC Davis led 15-1 at the break, then Tocchini and Preston each tacked on two in the third to extend the lead to 20-2.

In the nightcap, the Aggies fell into a 3-0 hole after the first quarter before working their way back to a one-goal deficit. Harvey's 6-on-5 conversion with 2:28 left in the second quarter cut the Stanford edge to just 4-3. Freshman Kat Klass hit a goal for the Cardinal to bump the margin to 5-3 at halftime.

After Stanford's Jordan Raney made it a three-goal difference to start the third, Hansen scored on a power play to again bring UC Davis to within 6-4. However, Stanford responded with four straight during the next 10 minutes to pull away to the win. Nonetheless, the five-goal final margin is the closest the Aggies have played the long-time national powerhouse since Stanford's 10-5 win over UC Davis back in 2008.

Senior Haley Cameron totaled 11 saves in two halves in front of the Aggie cage on Saturday. She notched eight in the first half against CSUMB, then stopped three more shots in the second half against Stanford. Redshirt junior Olivia Husted recorded five blocks in a third-quarter stint against the Otters before junior Avery Dotterer and redshirt freshman Katy Heatherton split up the fourth.

UC Davis concludes play at the LouStrong Memorial with an 8 a.m. matchup with CSU Bakersfield followed by a noon game against former Big West Conference member Pacific at noon.
