DAVIS, Calif. - Senior Carmen Eggert scored five goals while sophomore Keelia Houston added three goals and five assists, leading 13th-ranked UC Davis to 12-7 win over Cal State Monterey Bay in a season-opening women's water polo match at Schaal Aquatics Center Saturday afternoon.
The Aggies open their season at 1-0. The Otters even their record to 2-2.
Senior Jessica Dunn added two goals while Erin Schlueter and Hannah Curran each hit one for UC Davis. Three different Aggies saw action in the cage. Starter Riane Woods posted a pair of saves and three steals in the first half, Jillian Wilding guarded the net in the third, then freshman Haley Cameron stopped five shots - including three on exclusions - in her fourth-quarter collegiate debut.
Jackie Walters led CSUMB with three goals, scoring on exclusion opportunities in each of the first and four frames.
Eggert scored three of her goals on 6-on-5 chances, among UC Davis' six successful power plays. She netted three total goals in the first quarter and two more in the third. Houston figured on each of the Aggies' first four goals of the contest. She converted an assist from Dunn to put her team on the board in the opening minute, then distributed assists to Eggert twice and Schlueter once in extending the margin to four.
Eggert's drawn exclusion led to a Dunn 6-on-5 goal with 1:27 left in the first. Senior Danelle Kenny drew a kickout at two meters then fed Eggert for the conversion with 0:39 ticks. The Aggies led 6-2 after the opening quarter.
The UC Davis offense cooled somewhat in the second, managing just 2-for-8 shooting. Freshman Courtney Weddle found Curran down low for a goal at the 3:29 mark while Dunn completed another 6-on-5 chance from up top with nine seconds left. The Aggies stretched their 8-4 halftime lead to 11-6 through the third. Eggert scored twice in the first two minutes after the break then assisted Houston on a long outlet pass to complete a UC Davis counterattack opportunity.
Cameron tallied three saves within the first three minutes of play in the fourth quarter, including one on an exclusion shot. She later stopped a 6-on-5 attempt at nearly point-blank range, Houston came up with the steal against the Otters' rebound, then Curran and Houston teamed up for a 2-v-1 fast break on the opposite end to set the board at its 12-7 final.
UC Davis returns to action at home against No. 14 Indiana on Friday.
