DAVIS, Calif. - Sophomore Cassie Schaefer scored three goals while Christi Raycraft, Katherine O'Rourke and Jessica Soza each added two as UC Davis outlasted Pacific, 12-9, in the first of three collegiate women's water polo games at Schaal Aquatics Center Sunday.
The Aggies improve to 2-1 for the year.
UC Davis enjoyed a 3-0 lead out of the gates, getting two scores from Soza and a 6-on-5 conversion by junior Jessi Lafayette. Pacific's Jessica Schroeder finally put her team on the board in the final seconds, hitting the Aggie cage from four meters out. UC Davis shot just 2-for-10 in the first period.
Julie Snyder scored an even-strength and a 6-on-5 goal in the third period to help the Tigers close the gap to 5-4 at the halftime break. The trio of Virginia McConnell, Snyder and Schroeder each scored hat tricks for Pacific.
Raycraft hit a pair of goals within a 31-second span in the third quarter, the second of which gave UC Davis a 9-5 lead, its biggest of the game. McConnell scored back-to-back goals at the 2:48 and 2:17 marks in the third, but the Tigers never approached any closer.
Schaefer scored two of her three goals in the fourth quarter to keep the Aggies out of reach.
UC Davis faces Cal St. Hayward at 1:30 today.
