STANFORD, Calif. - Junior Keelia Houston scored a goal in each game as 17th-ranked UC Davis lost a pair of games to Top 5 opponents on the first day of the Stanford Invitational women's water polo tournament Saturday at Avery Aquatic Center.

The Aggies, who move to 1-3 for the year, lost by a 16-3 final against No. 2-ranked host Stanford, then dropped an 11-4 setback to fellow Big West Conference member UC Irvine. The Anteaters are ranked fifth nationally.

Houston joined sophomore Allyson Hansen, sophomore Ariel Arcidiacono and freshman Hannah Harvey among the UC Davis scorers in the afternoon loss to UCI. Hansen drew first blood in the contest, breaking the scoreless action almost three minutes into the opening quarter. However, the 'Eaters scored four straight in taking a 5-1 lead through the first period, then tacked on two more early in the second.

Houston ended the 12-minute scoring drought with her power-play goal with 1:25 left in the second half, setting the board at 7-2 at the break.

Arcidiacono converted a 6-on-5 opportunity in the final minute of the third quarter and Harvey scored her goal with 83 ticks left in the game, but UC Davis never cut into the five-goal margin, shooting 4-for-21 for the game. UCI, led by McKenna Mitchell's four goals, hit 11 of 22 overall.

In Saturday's early action, Houston, senior Hannah Curran and freshman Carla Tocchini each scored one goal in the 16-3 setback against the host Cardinal. Houston scored on a 6-on-5 chance early in the first quarter to tie the contest at 1-1, but Stanford responded with seven unanswered before Curran's natural goal made it 8-2 with 3:38 left in the second.

The Farm led by a 10-2 margin at halftime then extended its lead to 14-2 through three quarters before Tocchini broke the Aggie scoreless stretch with her goal at 4:23 in the fourth. The Cardinal shot 16-for-26 to its guest's 3-for-22, with junior Kiley Neushul leading the way with five scores.

UC Davis will face another Big West Conference leaguemate when it opens Sunday's play against No. 6 Hawai'i.
