STANFORD, Calif. - Junior Mary Dentice had the Aggies' lone goal as
No. 1-ranked Stanford handed UC Davis (1-2) a 13-1 loss Sunday afternoon
at the Avery Aquatic Center. The Aggies drop to 1-2 on the season. The Cardinal
opens at 1-0.
The Cardinal held the Aggies scoreless for the first 27 minutes and owned
an 8-0 halftime lead. Senior keeper Jackie Frank started the first half
and notched three saves before she was relieved by freshman Amanda Matuk
in the second half. In her collegiate debut, Matuk posted eight saves and
allowed only one goal. On the offensive side, nine different Cardinal players
scored at least one goal as Stanford claimed its first victory of 2003.
Junior Lauren Faust started off the day with a goal 41 seconds into the
new season after Frank made her first save of the day and sent the ball
down the pool to set up the scoring drive. Sophomore Kelty Luber added two
in the first quarter, including a 6-on-5 score while 2002 leading scorer
Brenda Villa chalked up her first goal of the season. The Cardinal doubled
its lead in the second period with another mark from Villa, two by senior
Julie Gardner and one from junior Wendy Watkins.
In the second half, the Stanford newcomers earned valuable minutes in
the water while the returning players guided them. Sophomore Hannah Luber
tallied two goals, freshman Lauren Boreta netted a penalty shot and freshman
Laurel Champion added another score before senior Nicole Huszcz finished
off the day with her first goal of the season.
In the net, Frank recorded three saves before Matuk came into the game
and collected eight in her first Stanford game. "It was really nice
to see Amanda play," commented Frank after the victory. "She played
really well and she's quick and enthusiastic. It's great to have her here."
UC Davis faces Cal St. Hayward for a fourth game in two days later Sunday
afternoon.
