STANFORD, Calif. - Seniors Carmen Eggert and Jessica Dunn each scored two goals but 12th-ranked UC Davis was unable to fully recover from a 3-0 first-quarter deficit in a 7-6 loss to eighth-ranked San Jose State in the opening contest of the Stanford Invitational women's water polo tournament at Avery Aquatic Center Saturday.

The Aggies also lost an exhibition game to the Olympic Club, which features numerous Cardinal alumnae including Davis native Kris Koblik.

UC Davis slips to 1-2 for the season, losing their second straight one-goal game to a Top 20 team.

Erin Schlueter and Hannah Curran also tallied a goal each for UC Davis. The Aggies trailed 3-0 through seven minutes of play before Eggert scored in the final seconds of the first period to put her team on the board. Dunn's successful power play early in the second quarter represented the only offense by either team, sending SJSU to the break with a 3-2 edge.

Sophomore Timi Molnar netted two goals for the Spartans in the third quarter, keeping her team on top by at least one goal. Victoria Smith extended the SJSU lead to 6-4 before the Aggies scored on back-to-back extra-player situtaions. Eggert cut the lead to one with her goal at the 5:56 mark while Dunn equalized at 6-6 less than a minute later. However, Spartan utility Anna Natalizio planted the game-winner on a power play with less than three minutes to go, setting the scoreboard to its final state of 7-6.

Curran and senior Kathryn Bailey led the Aggies with two goals each in the 8-6 loss to the Olympic Club. Eggert and sophomore Keelia Houston each added one. Koblik, who played for UC Davis head coach Jamey Wright on the Davis WPC, led the winged O with a hat trick.

UC Davis faces the top-ranked host Cardinal at 8 a.m. on Sunday, then wraps up the weekend with a placing game against one of the 'B' bracket teams. The opposite field of teams comprises UCLA, California, Hawai'i and Indiana.
