No. 11 Aggies upset No. 10 LBSU at Stanford Invite

Feb. 4, 2018

PALO ALTO, Calif. -- The No. 11 UC Davis women's water polo team officially concluded their run at the Stanford Invitational with a first-game loss against No. 2 Cal, but returned with a second-game upset win over No. 10 Long Beach State on Sunday at the Avery Aquatic Center and Belardi Pool, respectively.

Currently, the Aggies carry a 4-4 overall record.

In the morning game against Cal, senior Paige Virgil scored the first and second goals for UC Davis halfway through the first quarter, while Kathleen Schafle rounded out the first quarter by scoring the third team point with a goal at the two-minute mark.

The Aggies only scored one goal in the second and third quarter, while the Golden Bear powerhouse scored six goals. With a seven point deficit going into the final quarter, Schafle, Annie Kutt, Greta Kohlmoos, and Emily Aikema pushed through to score four more goals for the Aggies. Despite the team's last-quarter effort, UC Davis fell 14-9 against Cal.

In the game against No. 10 Long Beach State, Schafle was the only scorer for UC Davis in the first quarter; however, in the second quarter, the Aggies turned things around by making a four-goal comeback over the 49ers, the first of which came from Aikema 15 seconds into the quarter, and the last two coming from Hauss and Kutt, which made the game a temporary 5-5 tie.

Going into the second half of the match, the two teams remained neck-and-neck up until the teams reached an 8-8 tie at the three-minute mark; however, with only eight seconds left in the game, Kutt came in clutch by scoring one last goal for the Aggies, leading them to a 9-8 victory over the 49ers.

The UC Davis women's water polo team returns to the pools next weekend to participate in the Triton Invitational, hosted by UC San Diego. The Aggies will start their first tournament day with a matchup against Loyola Marymount at 12:00 p.m.
