STANFORD, Calif. - Junior Paige Virgil scored four goals and had a game-saving field block to boost No. 18 UC Davis to a 9-7 overtime win over No. 20 Loyola Marymount in the seventh-place game of the Stanford Invitational women’s water polo tournament at Avery Aquatic Center’s Belardi Pool Sunday.The Aggies lost their Day 2 opener to No. 4 California by a 17-2 final. They move to 2-8 for the season. Virgil had the first goal of the contest, the equalizer in the fourth quarter, and the go-ahead in overtime to lead UC Davis against their former Western Water Polo Association archrivals. Freshman Chloe Robinson and sophomore Annie Kutt also had two goals apiece, while McKenna Hauss added a score. In all, the Aggies-Lions matchup featured six ties, with UC Davis leading for about eight total minutes. Virgil scored her first goal with 2:11 in the first to give the Aggies the initial advantage, but LMU responded with a natural to open the second quarter, then took a 3-2 halftime lead behind two scores from sophomore Hana Vilanova. Robinson converted a power play in that frame. Virgil and Kutt each scored in the third but the Aggies still trailed by a 5-4 margin heading into the fourth. Robinson tied the contest at 5-5 with another 6-on-5 conversation at the 7:12 mark, the first of three ties in the final regulation frame. Hauss hit a perimeter shot to make it 6-6 with 3:04 left, and Virgil’s hat-trick goal set the board at 7-7 with 2:26 left. LMU had a power-play opportunity in the final minute, but Virgil was there defensively to stop the potential winner and force overtime. Each team defended against 6-on-5 chances in the first overtime segment, then Virgil and Kutt scored with 1:16 and 0:24 respectively, in the final three minutes. In Sunday’s early contest, only Virgil and freshman Devin Holcomb scored goals in the loss to California. UC Davis surrendered 11 unanswered before Virgil ended the drought with 34 ticks on the first-half clock. Holcomb scored hers with less than two minutes left in the fourth. The Aggies return to action at the Triton Invitational on February 11-12.
