LA JOLLA, Calif. - Cassie Schaefer's pair of first-half goals and Jenny Stephanopoulos' late score lifted UC Davis to a 4-3 win over Michigan, then San Diego State junior Rachel Serna scored a hat trick to lead her team to an 8-5 win over the Aggies during the first day of action of the UC San Diego Invitational women's water polo tournament Saturday.
UC Davis, ranked 13th in this week's collegiate women's water polo poll, moves to 5-2 on the season.
The Aztecs crafted a 5-0 lead, thanks to a pair of first-period goals by Serna. Stephanopoulos finally put the Aggies on the scoreboard at the 3:52 mark of the second quarter, scoring on a 4-meter penalty shot. UC Davis freshman Christi Raycraft and senior Nicole Lorrimer scored back-to-back goals in the early going of the third period to cut the margin to 5-3, then SDSU sophomore Elana Cervantes and Aggie freshman Jessica Soza traded goals to bring the score to 6-4. However, Serna's third goal and Dominique Delgado's second pushed the Aztecs ahead by 8-4 to close the third quarter.
UC Davis freshman Ashley Greenwood found the Aztec cage with 5:31 left in the fourth, but that was the end of the Aggie offense for the game. Aztec sophomore Ashley Reta sealed the win with a goal at the 2:08 mark.
In UC Davis' opener against No. 12 Michigan, Schaefer scored one goal in each of the first two periods, but both teams matched each other goal for goal through three periods. Stephanopoulos hit the game-winner in the final minutes of the fourth quarter and Nicole Hall recorded two key saves to help the Aggies take the win.
UC Davis will take on UC Santa Barbara at 2:35 p.m. Sunday, then faces Western Water Polo Association archrival UC San Diego in the tournament finale at 6:55.
