LA JOLLA, Calif. - Junior Brittany Russell scored four goals and senior Tiffany Hodgens added two as UC Davis defeated Cal Baptist, 10-8 in overtime, in Saturday's action of the two-day UC San Diego Arena Invitational women's water polo tournament.
The Aggies, who lost to UC Santa Barbara, 9-7, in their tournament opener, move to 2-2 on the season.
UC Davis added a goal in each three-minute overtime to break an 8-8 tie in regulation. Nicole Lorrimer, Annie Preble, Crisara Abrams and Jessi Lafayette also scored for the Aggies. Junior goalie Nicole Hall posted eight saves in net in the nightcap.
The Aggies trailed 5-1 at halftime in their early game against the Gauchos, but mounted a comeback to close the gap. Hodgens had an opportunity to cut the lead to one goal in the final minutes when she drew a four-meter penalty shot, but could not convert.
For the second straight week, the Aggies struggled on 6-on-5 situations, shooting just 3-for-12 in the loss. Hodgens led her team with three goals against UCSB. Abrams added two while Preble and Lorrimer each scored one. Hall recorded five saves in net.
"The freshmen did a good job. That's good to see," said Aggie head coach Jamey Wright. "Annie and Crisara scored in both games and Katherine O'Rourke played good defense at two-meters. Three freshmen playing well is exactly what we need."
The Aggies continue play in the Arena Invite on Sunday, facing Hartwick College of New York at noon, then UC Irvine at 4 p.m.
