LA JOLLA, Calif. - Second-half goals by freshman Christi Raycraft and sophomore Katherine O'Rourke helped lift No. 13 UC Davis to a 4-3 win over longtime conference rival UC San Diego in the final game of the UCSD Invitational women's water polo tournament Sunday. The Aggies' win over the 14th-ranked Tritons, coupled with an earlier 8-6 loss to No. 9 UC Santa Barbara, gave them a fifth-place finish in the tourney.
UC Davis is now 6-3 for the season.
The Aggies took a 2-0 lead in the first quarter against UCSD, scoring goals by sophomore Cassie Schaefer at 5:52 and Raycraft with four ticks remaining in the period. However, the Tritons equalized the game by halftime with second-period scores by Courtney Clevenger and Tobi Lyman.
Raycraft scored her second goal two minutes into the third quarter and O'Rourke increased the margin to 4-2 with her goal at the 4:02 mark in the fourth. The Tritons cut the lead to 4-3 on Jessica Wong's goal at 1:43, but UC Davis held on to the victory.
In the Aggies' earlier game, UC Santa Barbara scored five unanswered goals to turn a 2-0 UC Davis lead to a 5-2 deficit. Freshman Mary Lowe led UC Davis with her first career hat trick, scoring two goals in the fourth quarter to help trim the Gauchos' four-goal advantage.
Alaina Whitaker and Daina Saign led the Gauchos with three goals each. Raycraft, O'Rourke and senior Nicole Lorrimer also added goals for UC Davis.
The Aggies return to action on Wednesday, February 9 in a home game against sixth-ranked UC Berkeley.
