LA JOLLA, Calif. - Seniors Alex Rawlinson and Hannah Curran each scored hat tricks in a 12-5 win over Cal State East Bay, helping 15th-ranked UC Davis split its first day of action at the Triton Invitational women's water polo tournament at Canyonview Aquatic Center Saturday. The Aggies previously lost to No. 12 Long Beach State, 7-5, in their early matchup.

UC Davis moves to 3-6 for the year.

Curran scored all three of her goals in the first quarter against the Pioneers, while Rawlinson netted one in each of the first, second and third frames. Sophomore Allyson Hansen and freshman Carla Tocchini also had two goals apiece in the afternoon victory.

The Aggies never trailed against CSUEB, jumping out to a 4-1 start after Curran's second 6-on-5 goal at the 2:16 mark in the opening quarter. The Pioneers pulled within a single goal before Curran completed her hat trick on a five-meter penalty shot in the final second.

UC Davis extended its lead to 7-3 by halftime thanks to even-strength goals by Rawlinson and Tocchini in the second quarter, then pulled away to an 11-4 edge through three stanzas. Hansen netted each of her goals in the third. The Aggies 5-on-6 defense held the Pioneers in check during three power plays in the fourth.

In Saturday's early action, five players -- Hansen, Keelia Houston, Ariel Arcidiacono, Paige Oreglia and Erin Schlueter -- each tallied a goal for UC Davis in its loss to Big West Conference leaguemate Long Beach State. Houston scored on an exclusion in the opening minute to help the Aggies to the first strike, but LBSU's Chelsea Parks scored two in a 3-0 run to erase that edge.

Oreglia scored on the opening possession of the second to tie the contest at 3-3, but Parks' third goal at the 2:49 mark made it 4-3 at the break. The Beach never allowed UC Davis to equalize the rest of the way, taking two-goal leads twice in the third frame and once for the final tally.

The Triton Invite continues through Sunday, with the Aggies looking to finish as high as ninth among the 16-team field.
