LA JOLLA, Calif. -- UC Davis lost a tough 5-4 battle against host UC San Diego, then capitalized on its opponent's fouls for a 8-2 win over Cal St. Bakersfield in the second day of action of the UCSD Arena Invitational women's water polo tournament Sunday at Canyonview Pool.

The Aggies, who placed eighth in the tournament, even their overall record to 4-4. Both the Tritons and Roadrunners are fellow members of the Western Water Polo Association.

UC Davis fell behind 4-1 at the halftime break in the 8 a.m. game against UCSD, but cut the lead to 4-3 after three quarters. The Aggies tied the game early in the fourth period, but the Tritons countered with the winning goal minutes later. Brittany Russell led UC Davis with two goals in the loss, while Kristin Pfaff and Alli Johnstone added one each. Kelsey Whalen recorded four saves in net.

In the nightcap against CSUB, the Aggies converted on five of five 6-on-5 opportunities, riding out a 6-0 lead after three quarters en route to the 8-2 victory. Melissa Agee scored a pair of goals to lead UC Davis, while Johnstone, Alia Hansen, Jenny Booth, Michaela Brady and Nicole Lorrimer each had one score. Whalen posted seven saves in the win.

The Aggies head to Pacific on February 15, then host UC Berkeley on Sunday, February 16.
