LA JOLLA, Calif. - Junior Paige Virgil scored nine total goals, including a career-high seven in an 11-10 overtime victory over No. 14 Long Beach State, as 18th-ranked UC Davis split its first-day contests at the Triton Invitational women's water polo tournament at Canyonview Aquatic Center Saturday. The Aggies later fell to No. 5 Arizona State by a 19-9 final.
UC Davis moves to 3-9 for the year.
With the seven-goal output against LBSU, Virgil becomes just the second player in program history to post such a game. She joins Cal Aggie Athletics Hall of Famer Tiffany Hodgens, who did it twice in addition to her school-record eight at UC Santa Cruz back on February 1, 2002.
Freshman Kathleen Schafle netted her first collegiate goal with just 12 seconds in overtime in that win. Sophomore Annie Kutt added two more scores while junior Greta Kohlmoos chipped in another. Goalkeeper Avery Dotterer also had her best game as an Aggie against LBSU, posting a career-high 14 saves, including three in the overtime period.
The Aggies rallied to a 4-1 lead in the first seven minutes of play, getting two each from Virgil and Kutt. Virgil completed her hat trick on a penalty shot to end the second quarter, keeping UC Davis in front by a 6-4 margin. UC Davis never surrendered the lead in the second half, but an Alexandria Massier goal with 2:03 left in regulation equalized at 8-8.
The 49ers took their first lead in the first overtime segment with Annabel Harman's goal at 0:45. Tori Morrissey made it 10-8 with her goal at 2:07, but the Aggies responded with three answered in the final two minutes. Virgil hit a natural then followed with a 6-on-5 conversion with 0:53 remaining. The Aggies defended against a possible Beach go-ahead, then took possession one last time. Schafle scored with 12 ticks to prevent the sudden-victory period and seal the UC Davis win.
In the nightcap, the Aggies battled to a 7-7 tie during the first 14 minutes of play, thanks to three goals from Kohlmoos and another two from Virgil. However, ASU scored twice in the final minutes of the first half to hold a 9-7 edge at the break, then added another six straight to start the third. The Sun Devils led 15-8 entering the fourth quarter, then outscored UC Davis by a 4-1 margin in the finale.
The Aggies will face either UC San Diego or UC Irvine at 9:50 a.m. on Sunday. The 16-team tourney ends with the placing matchups from 1:30 to 5:50 p.m. that afternoon.
