DAVIS, Calif. - Senior Carmen Eggert scored three goals in each end of UC Davis' Saturday's doubleheader at the Davis Challenge women's water polo tournament at Schaal Aquatics Center. The 14th-ranked Aggies beat Cal Lutheran, 16-3, in the morning action; then closed the day with a 12-7 victory over No. 20 CSU Bakersfield.
UC Davis improves to 3-5 for the season, breaking a five-game skid that included two contests against top-ranked Stanford.
Sophomore Jillian Wilding made her first starts as an Aggie, posting seven saves against the Regals then matching her career high of 12 versus the Roadrunners. She came through in large fashion for UC Davis in the fourth quarter against CSUB, stopping seven shots including a 6-on-5 attempt.
Junior Alex Rawlinson and sophomore Elsie Fullerton each posted their first career hat tricks in the opener against CLU. Senior Jessica Dunn and junoir Hannah Curran added two tallies apiece. Eggert's three goals paced seven Aggie scorers in the nightcap win over the Roadrunners. Sophomore Keelia Houston netted two goals in the first quarter, senior Kathryn Bailey matched that total in the second, while Erin Schlueter hit goals in each of the first and third frames.
The Aggies went relatively unchallenged against CLU, with Dunn scoring on a counterattack and assisting Eggert on a goal in a 3-0 start. Six different UC Davis players scored six goals in the second to take a halftime lead of 10-1, then Rawlinson added a goal and assist in the third to bump the margin to 13-3 through 24 minutes. Sammi Murphy, a true freshman in her collegiate debut, assisted Fullerton at two meters on back-to-back goals in the fourth. She then scored her first Aggie goal with 2:23 remaining, converting an assist from Paige Oreglia.
UC Davis never trailed in the win over CSUB, with Houston's two goals highlighting a 4-1 first quarter. She completed a 6-on-5 opportunity at the 2:59 mark then popped a mid-range shot with 2:06 left. Schlueter assisted Dunn and Bailey on a pair of goals late in the second period to propel the Aggies to an 8-3 halftime lead, then scored her second goal in the third quarter to set the board at 10-4.
Eggert made it 11-5 in the final seconds of the third quarter on a short lob out of two meters, but the 'Runners whittled away at the lead in the fourth. Shannon McKenzie converted a power play with 7:40 left then Nicole Barrett scored her third goal of the game (and seventh of the day) at 4:22 to trim the Aggie advantage to 11-7. However, freshman Courtney Weddle gave UC Davis some insurance with a 6-on-5 strike from the weakside while Wilding became virtually unbeatable down the final stretch in sealing the victory.
In the lone neutral-site game, Barrett powered her way to five goals in CSU Bakersfield's 16-10 win over Cal Lutheran. The 'Runners crafted an 8-4 lead, then held off the Regals in the second half to take the victory. Morgan McCardell performed a hat trick to lead CLU in the afternoon game.
The Davis Challenge continues on Sunday with Pacific and Sonoma State filling out the field. The Aggies' first game is a 1:15 p.m. matchup with the Tigers. They finish up with a 4 p.m. tilt with the Seawolves.
