DAVIS, Calif.
— The UC Davis women’s water polo team came out 2-1 on Saturday at their annual Aggie Shoot-Out tournament, winning two games against Santa Clara, 6-15, and CSUMB, 4-14, but falling to No. 2 Cal. After the first tournament day, the Aggies were able keep their overall wins greater than their losses as they left Schaal Aquatics Center with a 9-6 overall record for the season.

Starting off the day with an early morning matchup between UC Davis and Santa Clara, the Aggies outscored the Broncos in all four quarters of the game. Senior utility Paige Virgil was the first to mark the Aggie scoreboard, which did not occur until halfway through the first quarter; however, teammates McKenna Hauss and Chloe Robinson each responded with back-to-back goals to get their team to a two-point lead entering the second quarter.

Virgil and Kutt opened up the second quarter with single goals clinched within a minute apart, while Emily Byrne rounded out the quarter by scoring two goals also within a minute from each other to help widen the gap between the Aggies and the Broncos.

In the last two quarters of the game, senior center Greta Kohlmoos was the only repeat scorer with two goals; however, the Aggies were able to add on five additional goals, thanks to Virgil, Meredith Arnett, Kutt, Emily Aikema, and Byrne, to conclude the game with 15-6 victory over the Sunnyvale, Calif., university.

The UC Davis and No. 2 Cal matchup was much less successful, as Kohlmoos was the only player to score a single goal over the Golden Bear powerhouse.

In the final game for the Aggies, the squad ended their Saturday on a high note as they pushed through to get a 14-4 win over CSUMB’s team.

In the first quarter alone, the Aggies scored six goals over the Otters without giving them an opportunity to score in return. Kohlmoos got the ball rolling by getting the first and third goals for her team, with Hauss scoring in-between, while Byrne, Kutt, and Aikema each contributed a goal to achieve a six-point mark in the starting quarter.

The Otters’ Morgan Tucker put the first point on the scoreboard for CSUMB during the second quarter, but UC Davis responded with three in-a-row goals by Ariana Momen, Marcela Portales, and Jill Bushman

With a seven-point lead going into the last half of the game, UC Davis maintained a strong defense over CSUMB, especially in the third quarter where the Otters could not score a single goal, but the home team also tallied up five more goals to conclude their game at a 10-point lead.

The UC Davis women’s water polo team returns to Schaal Aquatics Center tomorrow afternoon as they are scheduled to play back-to-back games against No. 23 Fresno State and China’s national team, respectively, to round out their tournament weekend.
