DAVIS, Calif. -
Tiffany Hodgens scored her 61st career hat trick while Brittany Russell and Alli Johnstone added two goals each to lead UC Davis to a 10-6 win over Cal St. Northridge in a women's collegiate water polo match at Schaal Aquatics Center Friday. With her second goal - scored in the first quarter - Hodgens also became the first player in school history to reach the 300-goal mark in her career.
The Aggies, winners of five straight, improve to 6-2 on the year. The Matadors drop to 2-8 overall.
Also scoring for UC Davis was Kristin Pfaff, Crisara Abrams and Sarah Rees. Abrams had perhaps the most dramatic Aggie goal of the contest, firing a rocket from approximately nine meters out midway through the third quarter.
"I thought we came out and made a really good statement with good pressure defense," said UC Davis head coach Jamey Wright. "We allowed one shot, scored five in a row on them, and really took control of the game."
Pam Barba and Erica Bonetti each scored twice for CSUN. Barba launched a shot from mid-tank with 55 second remaining in the first half, surprising even her own teammates. She added a 6-on-5 goal early in the third period, one of three Matador goals in that period.
UC Davis opened the game with a 5-1 advantage, taking that lead with Hodgens' third goal, then went up 6-2 when Jessi Lafayette set up Russell on a goal with five ticks left in the half. The Aggies' biggest lead came at 3:21 in the third, when Russell's backhanded shot sent the lead to 8-3.
Both teams participate in the 24th annual Davis Shootout on Saturday and Sunday.
