DAVIS, Calif. - Junior utility Jessica Dunn scored three goals while four other Aggies added two each, helping 13th-ranked UC Davis pull away to a 16-8 win over Cal Baptist in non-conference women's collegiate water polo action at Schaal Aquatics Center Friday afternoon.
The Aggies, playing in their 2012 home opener, improve to 4-9 for the year. The Lancers fall to 4-7.
Besides Dunn's hat trick, senior Carey Faber, junior Carmen Eggert, sophomore Hannah Curran and freshman Allyson Hansen each tallied a pair of goals. Alicia Began, Kathryn Bailey, Kaylee Queipo-Miller, Lyndsay Sutterley and Alex Rawlinson accounted for the remaining five tallies on the scoresheet.
Neither team could alter the scoreboard for the first three minutes of play until freshman Elsie Fullerton assisted Began at two meters for a goal at the 3:32 mark in the first. UC Davis held a 3-1 lead after the opening period before CBU senior Tania Acevedo hit back-to-back goals to tie the contest at 3-3. Acevedo converted a power play at 5:30 at the second then planted a hard tracer into the cage with 4:10 left. She then had a chance to complete her hat trick on a counterattack, but Aggie goalkeeper Riane Woods stopped the shot.
Queipo-Miller delivered the go-ahead goal with 1:56, then both teams engaged in fireworks down the stretch before halftime. Dunn hit a five-meter penalty shot at 1:14, Lancer junior Kim Latschaw immediately answered with a two-meter goal on the opposite end, then Dunn struck again early in the next possession. Finally, Dunn assisted Bailey for a goal in the final seconds of the half. UC Davis led 7-4 at the break.
The Aggies exploded for nine goals in the second half, including a 3-0 run midway through the third. Faber's goal from nine meters out gave UC Davis a 12-6 lead with a fraction of a second left in the third period. Sutterley hit a second-chance goal early in the fourth to continue the Aggies' offensive charge.
Friday's game serves as a prelude for the UCI Invitational tournament, held jointly at the Irvine campus and Corona Del Mar High School. The Aggies will open with fifth-ranked Arizona State at the CDM pool on Saturday at 12:45.
