Aggies sweep Saturday doubleheader at Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Junior center Greta Kohlmoos scored five total goals while senior Hannah Harvey totaled six assists to lead 13th-ranked UC Davis to a pair of victories at Santa Clara during a non-conference women's water polo doublehader at Sullivan Aquatic Center Saturday. The Aggies blasted Cal State Monterey Bay, 16-2, then stayed a step ahead of the host Broncos en route to an 11-7 win.


UC Davis improves to 9-11 for the season.


Kohlmoos scored a hat trick in the opener against CSUMB then joined sophomores McKenna Hauss and Annie Kutt among two-goal scorers in the afternoon victory against SCU. 


The first quarter stayed close early on, with Bronco Lauren Paxton equalizing at 2-2 on a second-chance goal with 3:21 left. However, Harvey assisted Hauss on back-to-back scores to give UC Davis a 4-2 lead at the end of the frame, then Jill Bushman's power-play goal made it three straight and a 5-2 advantage early in the second frame.


The Aggies pulled ahead by as much as 7-3 after Virgil's five-meter penalty shot midway through the second. Their lead also diminished to as close as a single goal after Bronco Keri Clifford made it 7-6 with her goal at 2:22 in the third. However, Harvey's goal in the final possession of the third ignited would became a 4-0 run for the Aggies.


Senior Avery Dotterer guarded the Aggie cage for seven saves against Santa Clara.


In Saturday's early action, Kohlmoos scored her hat trick while Virgil, Marcela Portales and Sammy Preston each added two in the 16-2 win over Cal State Monterey Bay. Harvey also had a goal and four assists.


The Aggies never trailed in their opener with the Otters, taking a 3-0 lead within the first two minutes of play. CSUMB managed to find the net twice in the first quarter, the second of which closing the gap to 4-2. However, UC Davis scored 12 unanswered for the remainder of the game. The Aggies led 6-2 after the first quarter, 8-2 at halftime, then exploded for seven straight in the third.


Freshman Caitlin Golding earned the start against the Otters, tallying seven saves against the two goals allowed.


UC Davis returns to action for the Wolverine Invitational at Michigan on March 4-5. The Aggies open with host U-M then face Pacific, Bucknell and Hartwick during the two-day event.
