NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - Despite a hat trick by junior Jessica Dunn in each game, 13th-ranked UC Davis was unable to complete second-half comebacks in losses to No. 5 Arizona State and No. 15 UC Santa Barbara at the UCI Invitational women's water polo tournament Saturday. The Aggies fell to the Sun Devils, 14-12, then to the Gauchos by a 10-9 final.

UC Davis, which now has faced eight opponents ranked in the top five, moves to 4-11 for the year.

Dunn scored three goals while three of her teammates added two each in the early-afternoon battle with fifth-ranked Arizona State. After a 7-7 halftime tie, UC Davis briefly took an 8-7 lead early in the third quarter before surrendering four answered Sun Devil goals.

The Aggies managed to creep back to within a one-goal deficit when junior Carmen Eggert punched in a shot with 1:07 remaining. But UC Davis could not equalize, allowing Kelsey White to complete her hat trick on the next possession.

Eggert, Carey Faber and Hannah Curran each netted two goals in the loss to ASU. Kathryn Bailey, Ariel Feeney and Dakotah Mohr had one apiece. Junior goalkeeper Riane Woods posted nine saves.

Dunn matched her three-goal total in the nightcap with UC Santa Barbara while freshman Elsie Fullerton chipped in a pair of goals. The Aggies, who trailed 5-3 at halftime, battled back from an 8-4 deficit to approach within a single goal with 6:15 remaining in the fourth. Senior Alicia Began scored at the 3:41 mark to again cut the Gaucho lead to 9-8.

UCSB converted 4 of 7 power-play opportunities while UC Davis only capitalized on one of its seven chances. Eggert, Faber, Feeney and Began each had a goal. Senior goalkeeper Rachel Tatusko stopped six shots in the cage for the Aggies.

The UCI Invitational annually features the toughest 16-team field of any tournament of the year. Fifteen of the national top 20, including the entirety of the top 10, are competing in the 2012 event.

The Aggies continue tournament action on Sunday morning, facing No. 8 San Jose State or No. 19 UC San Diego at the CDM site.
