SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Robyn Kaake scored five straight goals to lead 16th-ranked UC Irvine to a 7-3 win over UC Davis in the 13th-place game of the UC Santa Barbara Daktronics Gaucho Invitational women's water polo tournament Sunday.
The Aggies, tied for 12th in last week's national coaches' poll, drop to 7-11 for the year.
UC Davis took a brief 1-0 lead when Katherine O'Rourke scored with 3:09 remaining in the first quarter, but the Anteaters responded with four unanswered goals to craft a 4-1 lead during the next seven minutes. Freshman Mary Lowe added a 6-on-5 goal with 1:09 left in the second half, then UCI answered back with Kaake's fourth score of the game.
Nicole Lorrimer hit another player-up goal in the final seconds before halftime to cut the lead to 5-3 at the break. However, that was the last score for UC Davis. Kaake scored her fifth goal in the third quarter and Aleah Amr opened the fourth period with her lone goal to extend the lead to its final tally of 7-3.
UC Davis begins a three-week homestand on March 5, hosting Santa Clara and Arizona State.
