SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Junior center Brittany Russell scored a total of seven goals in two games as UC Davis split its first-day action at the Gaucho Invitational women's water polo tournament at UC Santa Barbara Saturday. The 14th-ranked Aggies lost to San Diego State, 7-4, then beat UC Irvine by a 9-5 margin, moving to 10-5 on the season.
Russell scored four goals in the win over the Anteaters, who had fallen to Long Beach State earlier in the day. Senior Tiffany Hodgens added three goals while Annie Preble and Katherine O'Rourke each put up one score. Meggan Brownrigg posted five saves in net for the Aggies.
In earlier action, UC Davis scored one goal in each of four quarters to drop a 7-4 game to fifth-ranked San Diego State. Russell performed a hat trick in the loss, including a four-meter penalty goal in the second period. Hodgens accounted for her team's other goal. Goalkeeper Nicole Hall tallied 10 saves.
The Aggies open with Western Water Polo Association rival Loyola Marymount at 8 a.m. Sunday.
