Aggies Suffer Another Heartbreaker Against Golden Bears

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UC Davis weathered a tough second quarter to post a 5-4 loss against UC Berkeley in the first-round game, then rebounded to beat Pacific, 10-5, in the final game of the first day of action at the Gaucho Invitational at UC Santa Barbara's Rec Center Pool Friday.The Aggies move to 10-7 on the season.

UC Davis had an early 2-1 lead against the Golden Bears, but were held scoreless through the second quarter to carry a 5-2 deficit at the break. The Aggies threatened again in the fourth quarter when goalie Kelsey Whalen set up Missy Duncan on a counterattack to cut the Cal advantage to 5-4. UC Davis had one final possession with 12 seconds remaining, but could not convert the game-tying goal.

Shannon McGee, Beth Jay and Alli Johnstone also had goals against Cal. The loss marks the second time UC Davis has lost to the fifth-ranked Golden Bears this season, each of which came by a single goal.

In Friday's nightcap, Brittany Russell's two goals led a total of nine Aggie scorers in a second-round win over the Western Water Polo Assocation foe Pacific. UC Davis scored on the first two possessions of the game and never trailed in the victory.

Jay, Johnstone, Melissa Agee, Alia Hansen, Jenny Booth, Adri Killingsworth, Jesse Lafayette and Nicole Lorrimer also scored in the win over the Tigers. Whalen recorded four saves and two steals during three quarters in net.

 

 

UC Davis continues action at the Gaucho Invite with an 8 a.m. contest against San Jose State.
