NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Despite hat tricks from UC Davis seniors Jessica Dunn and Carmen Eggert, it was Cal State Northridge junior Leah Janke who enjoyed the biggest heroics, scoring the game-winner in the final minute to lead the host Matadors to a 11-10 victory over the Aggies in a Big West Conference women's water polo opener at Matador Pool Friday.
No. 13 UC Davis falls to 10-8 for the year and begins conference play at 0-1. 15th-ranked CSUN improves to 13-5 overall and 1-0 in Big West action.
Dunn hit a goal in each of the first three quarters while Eggert scored in the first, third and fourth frames. Junior center Hannah Curran added two goals, including the go-ahead midway through the fourth quarter. Katrina Husted and Alex Rawlinson also netted one score. Senior Riane Woods finished with 10 saves in front of the UC Davis cage.
For the Matadors, attacker Lindsy Nelson and center Marisa Young each scored three goals.
In a contest in which neither team led by more than two goal, the two teams battled to nine ties and seven lead changes. Nelson hit two goals to help CSUN craft a 3-2 lead in the first quarter, then Doll opened the second with a natural to extend the margin to 4-2.
However, Dunn converted a 6-on-5 chance with 4:09 left in the second and Curran followed with an even-strength goal to knot the match back to 4-4 with 2:33 left in the half. Rawlinson gave the Aggies their first lead at the 1:34 mark and Husted scored on a power play soon after to push UC Davis up to its largest advantage of 6-4. CSUN center Molly Henehan cut the gap to 6-5 with her goal with 11 second before the break.
Neither team led by more than one goal throughout the second half. Dunn and Eggert each scored in the third quarter, the first to provide the Aggies with a 7-6 lead, the second to tie the game at 8-8. Young's goal a minute into the fourth restored the CSUN lead to 9-8, only to have UC Davis flip the lead on goals by Eggert and Curran.
Kelcie Ferreira tied the game yet again at 10-10 with her natural goal at the two-minute mark. Then after UC Davis was charged with an exclusion with 53 seconds remaining, Janke scored her only goal on an extra-player opportunity, lifting Northridge to the victory.
UC Davis continues Big West Conference play with a road tilt at UC Santa Barbara at noon on Saturday.
