SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Senior hole setter Beth Jay scored three goals in two games as UC Davis suffered losses to San Jose State and UC Irvine to place 12th at UC Santa Barbara's Gaucho Invitational Sunday. The Aggies lost to the Spartans in a 6-5 battle in early-morning action, then lost to the Anteaters, 9-2, in the 11th-place game of the 16-team tournament.
UC Davis moves to 10-9 on the season.
Five different Aggies -- Jay, Kristin Pfaff, Melissa Agee, Brittany Russell and Alli Johnstone -- scored in the opener against SJSU. The two teams were tied 2-2 at halftime and 3-3 after three quarters, but the Spartans edged UC Davis in the fourth to post the win.
In the 11th-place game, the Aggies trailed Irvine by a 4-2 margin after three quarters, with both goals coming from Jay. However, the Anteaters outscored UC Davis 5-0 in the fourth to pull away with the victory.
The Aggies are idle until March 27, when they face Irvine and Loyola Marymount.
