BERKELEY, Calif. --- Junior all-arounder Jodie Needles posted three goals to lead six different Golden Bear scorers to lead UC Berkeley to an 8-3 win over UC Davis in a collegiate women's water polo game at Spieker Aquatics Center Wednesday.

The Aggies, ranked 12th in last week's U.S. Water Polo poll, drop to 14-8 on the season. The sixth-ranked Golden Bears improve to 6-7.

UC Davis scored its goals by Tiffany Hodgens - on a 6-on-5 opportunity in the third quarter - and freshmen Katherine O'Rourke and Crisara Abrams.

Cal took a 4-0 lead in the first quarter on goals by Needles, Lindy Spieker, Ashley Miller and Elsie Windes, then added another score on a four-meter penalty shot at 4:36 in the second. UC Davis trailed 5-0 entering the halftime break.

"If I had been in the stands watching this game, I would've seen a team outplaying us physically," said Aggie head coach Jamey Wright. "To win a game like this, we have to match or exceed their physicality, we can't make multiple mistakes and we have to make the lesser players beat us. We came up short on all three."

The Aggies had three straight 6-on-5 opportunities in the early going of the third quarter, but could not convert on the first two. Hodgens drew a kick-out at 5:34, but her shot attempt was blocked. Just over a minute later, Aggie freshman Kristin Pfaff drew an ejection of Natalie Nelson, but her shot caromed off the crossbar. Finally, on the third 6-on-5 situation, Hodgens found the back of the cage to put the Aggies on the board.

O'Rourke added another goal at 2:40 in the third, but Needles completed her hat trick with a goal at 2:14, just as the Aggies returned to even strength after a Brittany Russell ejection.

Abrams scored the only Aggie goal in the fourth quarter, converting a pass from Hodgens with 41 seconds remaining in the game. Allison Gold hit a penalty shot and Lauren McGee added another goal for the Golden Bears in the final quarter.

Goalkeeper Meggan Brownrigg was a bright spot for the Aggies defensively, posting 10 saves against 20 Golden Bear shots.

UC Davis returns to Schaal Aquatics Center for games against Hartwick College (10 a.m.) and Santa Clara (4 p.m.) on Saturday, March 13.
