DAVIS, Calif. - Junior center Brittany Russell scored a total of six goals and senior Tiffany Hodgens added five more, leading UC Davis to a pair of wins in collegiate women's water polo action at Schaal Aquatics Center Saturday. The Aggies outlasted Hartwick College in their morning game by a 13-11 final, then beat Santa Clara, 10-3, in the afternoon game.
In the nightcap, the Broncos played their host close for the first and second quarters, trailing just 4-3 at halftime. Katie Radvanyi scored on a skip shot with 3:48 remaining, then converted a pass from Catherine Flynn to tie the game at 3-3 at the 2:19 mark. Russell answered with her second goal just 14 seconds later, igniting a 7-0 finish to the game.
Hodgens scored two of her three Game 2 goals in the third quarter, while senior Alli Johnstone added a putback and freshman Annie Preble converted a feed from Michaela Brady to help UC Davis stretch the advantage to 8-3 after three quarters of play. In the fourth quarter, Jennie Chiavetta added a pair of goals and goalkeeper Amber Korner posted four saves in shutout relief as the Aggies closed out the win.
"Santa Clara is a much-improved team so a 4-3 first half wasn't surprising to me, but the 6-0 second half was really good," said Aggie head coach Jamey Wright. "The whole bench played big parts of the second half. We got to rest people. We got to rest Tiffany's shoulder a bit. That's what we wanted to do.
"I told the team to take from this weekend the offense in the first game - 13 goals against a really good team - and then the defense in the second half."
Kathleen Hamm accounted for the third Bronco goal. SCU goalie Anne Ginotti recorded six saves in net. For UC Davis, Meggan Brownrigg started in net, tallying four saves in three quarters.
The Aggies' morning contest with the Hawks started as a see-saw battle. Carly Strub's goal at 3:38 in the third quarter represented the seventh tie in the game, but Preble put UC Davis back into the lead moments later, scoring from five meters out. That proved to be the game-winning shot, as a goal by Katherine O'Rourke at 1:45 in the third quarter and another by Alia Hansen early in the fourth stretched the Aggie margin to 10-7.
Hartwick senior Sheri Johnson scored a school-record eight goals against the Aggies, including the team's first six of the day. Strub, Ashley Jacobs and Kate Chambers also scored for the Hawks.
Hartwick and Santa Clara also faced off in neutral-site action between the two Aggie contests. Johnson, Jacobs and Keri James each posted hat tricks to lead the Hawks to a 11-9 win over the Broncos. Katie Radvanyi was Santa Clara's top scorer with four goals, all before halftime.
UC Davis breaks for final examinations, then returns to action in Southern California with games at Cal Baptist, UC Irvine and Loyola Marymount on March 29 through 31.
